Significance
Commissioned in 1914, the USS Texas is the last surviving dreadnought battleship in the world and served in both World War I and World War II before being decommissioned and preserved as a museum ship. It has been moored near the San Jacinto Monument since 1948, creating a paired historic site commemorating both the 1836 Battle of San Jacinto and twentieth century American naval history along the same stretch of the Houston Ship Channel. The battleship's riveted steel hull and early twentieth century naval architecture make it an exceptionally rare surviving example of pre-World War I dreadnought design. In recent years the ship has undergone extensive multi-year hull preservation and repair efforts, including a period in dry dock, to address severe corrosion and leaks that threatened its long term survival as a floating and now permanently berthed museum vessel.
Climate risks tracked
Click a risk to see what it means for this building.
Moored in the tidal waters near Galveston Bay and the Houston Ship Channel, the USS Texas faces severe storm surge risk during hurricanes, a vulnerability starkly demonstrated by the vessel's history of flooding and near-sinking incidents caused by hull leaks exacerbated by storm conditions. Hurricane force winds threaten the ship's exposed superstructure and rigging, while persistent humidity and saltwater exposure accelerate corrosion of the century old riveted steel hull, a primary driver behind the ship's extensive ongoing preservation and dry dock repair efforts. These combined coastal climate pressures make the Texas one of the most climate vulnerable historic sites in the Houston region.
