Significance

Completed in 1928 and designed by architect John F. Staub in the Latin Colonial Revival style, Bayou Bend was the residence of philanthropist and civic leader Ima Hogg, daughter of Texas governor James Stephen Hogg, until she donated the estate to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston in 1957. The house now serves as the museum's American decorative arts wing, displaying an extensive collection of American furniture, silver, ceramics, and paintings that Hogg assembled over decades. Its fourteen acres of gardens, meticulously designed along the banks of Buffalo Bayou, are considered among the finest examples of designed landscape architecture in the American South, featuring distinct garden rooms that Hogg herself helped plan. As both an architectural and horticultural landmark, Bayou Bend reflects Houston's early twentieth century River Oaks era of grand estate building along the bayou.

Climate risks tracked

Click a risk to see what it means for this building.

Bayou Bend's location directly along Buffalo Bayou places both the historic house and its celebrated gardens at significant risk from bayou and urban flooding, a vulnerability starkly realized during Hurricane Harvey in 2017 when the bayou's floodwaters inundated the estate's lower gardens and required extensive post-storm restoration of plantings and infrastructure. The house's masonry and stucco construction faces hurricane wind risk that can damage roofing and window assemblies, while its proximity to the bayou's floodplain also threatens the museum's decorative arts collection housed within, requiring careful flood mitigation planning for one of Houston's most historically significant riverside estates.
