Significance

The Gregory School was built by the Houston Independent School District in 1926 as an elementary school for Black children in the Fourth Ward, designed by the architects Hedrick & Gottlieb. It stands on the site of, and succeeded, the Gregory Institute, established in 1870 as the first public educational institution for African Americans in Houston. The two story building has a reinforced concrete frame clad in brick, with an H shaped plan of twenty classrooms opening off cross halls. It is a contributing building in the Freedmen's Town Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1985, was designated a State Antiquities Landmark in 1995, and became a City of Houston Landmark in 2003. After a full restoration by the City and the Houston Public Library, it reopened as the African American Library at the Gregory School, now the African American History Research Center, which includes a restored 1926 classroom.

Climate risks tracked

Click a risk to see what it means for this building.

The Gregory School sits in Freedmen's Town near Buffalo Bayou, where the historic brick streets and low terrain can hold water in heavy rain. Because the building now houses irreplaceable archives and photographs, keeping collections off the ground floor or in flood resistant storage, with backflow protection and raised electrical service, is the most important resilience measure. The brick veneer and tall original style windows are the building's defining features. Keeping mortar sound and window seals tight limits wind driven rain during hurricanes, and steady climate control matters more here than in most buildings because humidity damages paper collections. Backup power for dehumidification after storms protects the archive as much as the structure.
