Significance
The quiosco was commissioned by the Mexican American community of Magnolia Park under the leadership of local physician A. G. Gonzales. Built for $2,300, it was dedicated at the opening of Hidalgo Park on September 16, 1934, the anniversary of Mexico's independence from Spain. The city had acquired the park land in 1926 when it annexed the City of Magnolia Park. It was designed and built by Vidal Lozano, a Mexican native and Houston iron works molder and pipe fitter, in the faux bois, or trabajo rústico, style. The 25 by 25 foot bandstand has an iron frame covered entirely in hand molded concrete that imitates wood: eight columns shaped like tree trunks with different bark textures, railings like branches, a ceiling like wood shingles, and a thatch like roof. A step bears the inscription "Houston Mexicans to their city, V. Lozano."
Climate risks tracked
Click a risk to see what it means for this building.
Hidalgo Park lies near the Houston Ship Channel, so the quiosco faces both heavy rain flooding and the possibility of hurricane surge pushed up the channel. Because it is an open structure of concrete over iron, water itself does less harm than the corrosion it causes: when moisture reaches the iron frame, rust expands and cracks the hand sculpted concrete surface. The priority is protecting the irreplaceable faux bois finishes by sealing cracks with compatible materials, keeping the roof shedding water, and monitoring for rust stains that signal hidden corrosion. Repairs should be done by artisans experienced in trabajo rústico so the bark textures and branch railings keep their handmade character. Industrial air along the channel adds to weathering, so regular gentle cleaning helps.
