Significance

Encompassing structures dating from the 1870s through the early 1900s, the Old Sixth Ward Historic District is considered the most intact Victorian era neighborhood in Houston, characterized by wood frame cottages, shotgun houses, and Queen Anne residences that reflect the working and middle class residential development patterns of nineteenth century Houston. The neighborhood grew up around the railroad shops and warehouses that once lined nearby Buffalo Bayou and the historic rail corridors, housing many of the workers employed in Houston's early transportation and industrial economy. Designated a National Register historic district, Old Sixth Ward has become a model of grassroots neighborhood preservation, with residents actively working to protect its historic housing stock from the demolition pressures that have transformed much of the rest of Houston's inner city neighborhoods over the past several decades.

Climate risks tracked

Click a risk to see what it means for this building.

The Old Sixth Ward's wood frame Victorian cottages and shotgun houses are highly susceptible to hurricane wind damage given their light construction and age, with decorative porch elements and original wood siding especially vulnerable during major storms. The neighborhood's proximity to downtown and historically low lying terrain near Buffalo Bayou has resulted in significant urban flooding during intense storms such as Hurricane Harvey. Houston's persistent humidity combined with the age of these wood structures creates ongoing risk of mold growth and wood rot, requiring continuous maintenance investment from homeowners to preserve the district's historic character.
