Significance
Completed in 1965 as the American General Building and later renamed for insurance magnate and civic leader Gus Wortham, this 25 story tower anchors the American General Center campus overlooking Buffalo Bayou. Designed by the Houston firm Lloyd, Morgan and Jones, it is one of the city's clearest statements of corporate Mid-Century Modern design: a crisp rectangular volume wrapped in a fine gold toned sunshade grid that shades the glass behind it, capped by a deep projecting roof slab. Wortham founded American General in 1926 and used its success to underwrite much of Houston's cultural life, from the symphony to the endowment that still carries his name, so the tower reads as both a business headquarters and a monument to mid century Houston philanthropy. Its low rise campus setting, generous lawns and bayou frontage also make it a rare surviving example of the suburban style corporate campus built just outside the downtown core during the postwar boom.
Climate risks tracked
Click a risk to see what it means for this building.
The tower's sunshade grid and continuous glazing are its most exposed elements: hurricane force winds carrying debris, as seen across Houston during Hurricane Ike in 2008, put large areas of curtain wall glass at risk and can loosen the slender metal fins of the brise soleil. The campus sits immediately above Buffalo Bayou, so intense rainfall events of the Harvey type send water across the surrounding lawns and parking structures and threaten below grade mechanical and electrical rooms. Extreme summer heat drives heavy cooling loads through a facade designed before modern high performance glazing, and the Gulf Coast clay beneath the site expands and contracts through drought and downpour cycles, a long term source of foundation and paving movement across the complex.
