Significance
The San Jacinto Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas built this log house in 1936, raising almost $3,000 for it during the Great Depression. The City of Houston donated land in Hermann Park in honor of the city's founders, the Allen brothers. More than 250 pine logs were cut, peeled, and saddle notched, and members gathered stones and bricks from historic buildings and ancestral homes for its construction and the fireplace that spans one end. The house was dedicated on March 2, 1936, the centennial of the Texas Declaration of Independence, and served as a hospitality center during the Texas Centennial year. It has remained the chapter's meeting place. The Texas Historical Commission placed a marker on it in 1986, and in 1996 it was rededicated as a museum of early Texas history.
Climate risks tracked
Click a risk to see what it means for this building.
Pine logs are far less rot resistant than cedar, so in Houston's humidity the log house depends on good roof overhangs, sound chinking, and dry sill logs. Inspecting log ends and the bottom courses for decay and insect damage, and repairing them with matching saddle notched pine, preserves the 1936 craftsmanship that is the building's story. Hermann Park's mature trees shade the house but pose a falling limb risk in hurricanes, so regular arborist pruning is a key resilience step. The fireplace built of salvaged historic stones and bricks should be kept tied to the structure and capped against rain. Inside, stable humidity protects the museum's documents and artifacts.
